Starting Points |
Merchant City Tours begin at the tourist bus stop at Merchants Square, Wilson Street. All three West End tours begin at the tourist bus stop in Byres Road, just south of University Avenue. Tours will end at the same, or a nearby, bus stop at the discretion of the guide. |
Walkin’ Glasgow heritage walking tours are presented by expert local guides in association with the Friends of Glasgow West and Scotguide Ltd. The 90-minute walks will examine the rich architectural and social history of four quintessential neighbourhoods of old Glasgow: the Merchant City, Partick, Hillhead and Dowanhill.
The Walkin’ Glasgow tours have been designed to educate, inform and entertain the new visitor to Glasgow and the longtime resident alike. |

The Merchant City developed during Glasgow’s first economic boom in the late 18th century, as the medieval city spread westward to accommodate the genteel Georgian townhouses of the Tobacco Lords and other wealthy businessmen. In the 19th century, the Merchant City evolved into a business district.
The West End of Glasgow is a superlative example of a Victorian suburb, with a wide variety of handsome villas, terraces and tenements built for the city’s moneyed classes, together with distinguished churches, schools and other fine public buildings.
Each West End tour explores a distinct neighbourhood: Partick, a medieval milling village which grew into a centre of shipbuilding and became a proud, working-class burgh; Hillhead, the first Victorian district built west of the River Kelvin and the home of the University of Glasgow since 1870; and picturesque Dowanhill, a residential area with the highest concentration of listed buildings in Glasgow. |
